In Loving Memory of Anita Behr Richards (1938-2026)

It is with profound sadness that we share news of the passing of Anita Behr Richards, a longtime supporter and beloved member of The Sembrich and Bolton Landing community.

Anita’s long history with The Sembrich began in 1944 when her father Geroge Behr was hired as caretaker of the museum property and Pine Hill, the summer home of Juliette de Coppet Stengel, daughter-in law of Mme. Sembrich and founder of the museum. To members of the museum staff, Anita often recalled fond memories of her childhood in Bolton Landing and of "Mrs. Stengel."

Anita and her husband Charlie moved to Bolton in 1985 and opened Hilltop Cottage Bed & Breakfast. In the following years, both Anita and Charlie volunteered countless hours for The Sembrich.

In 1990, Anita was named The Sembrich's first Administrative Director and laid the groundwork for the organization's future growth. In 2003, she transitioned to the part-time role of Program Coordinator which she held until her retirement in 2019. During her tenure, she completed the first comprehensive inventory of the museum's vast collections, and founded the Young Performers Showcase, which—now in its 21st season—continues to present promising young talent from across our region.

Following her retirement, Anita remained an active volunteer and in 2021, joined the Board of Directors. She was named a Member Emerita of the Board following the conclusion of her term in 2025.

Anita's presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at Alexander Funeral Home (3809 Main Street, Warrensburg, NY). Calling hours will precede the service from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM.
