On April 21st, 1884, when Marcella Sembrich performed at the Metropolitan Opera benefit for Henry Abbey, she was singled out by the New York Telegram as “the feature of the evening. She shone like a meteor in a galaxy of stars…She played the violin like a virtuoso and the piano as if she had done nothing else all her life.”

Violinist Ayano Ninomiya, winner of both Naumburg International Violin Competition and the Tibor Varga Competition, together with pianist Timothy Lovelace, pays tribute to Sembrich with a virtuosic program of operatic showpieces arranged for violin and piano. The concert features selections from The Magic Flute, The Barber of Seville, Faust and Carmen and includes a performance of Beriot’s Violin Concerto No. 7, the very work with which Sembrich regaled the Met audience in 1884.
